The cloud has an address

Everything you have heard about data centres is a carefully told story. This is the version told by the land, the water and the people who live next to it.

film 01 · cover
A man stands in a street with children and neighbours gathered behind him

the question

India wants to become home to the world's AI data centres, and Visakhapatnam is where that ambition is turning into concrete. The pitch is jobs, investment and digital progress. We want to know what it actually costs, and who pays.

what we are looking at

  • people

The land acquired, the families who gave it up, and the jobs promised against the jobs that arrive.

  • planet

How much power and water these sites need, and what that means for the region around them.

  • profit

Who invests, who receives incentives, and who earns once the servers switch on.

  • perception

What people are saying about data centres online, analysed post by post, against what the official story says.

on the ground

Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Interviews with people living near the sites, and with experts in technology, energy and policy.
